Johnstown Train Station Reuse Study Underway
December 8, 2016
Urban Partners has been retained by PennDOT to conduct a reuse strategy for the historic Johnstown, PA train station in collaboration with KSK Architects/Historians/Planners. Designed by Kenneth MacKenzie Murchison in 1916, the station boasts self-supporting vaults and arches and reflects Johnstown’s stature as a prominent steel center, with output rivaling that of the City of Pittsburgh in the early 20th century. The station today continues to provide daily serve to Altoona, Harrisburg, Philadelphia and New York to the East and Greensburg and Pittsburgh to the west on the Pennsylvanian. We will examine market conditions for retail, office, commercial, flex and recreational/entertainment uses within the station structure and surrounding site and, working with PennDOT and the Johnstown Area Heritage Association, create property reuse concepts that take advantage of the station’s architectural character and the site’s development potential.
